WFCC and Ahead have teamed up to organise a charity ride on 21 May 2011.

Ahead support poor people in Ethiopia with their health, education and development (income generation) needs. Its founder Elfneh visited our last monthly meeting and we were very excited about the ride he suggested.

Elfneh is a keen cyclist himself and in fact his Scottish team mates have just done a 450-mile ride from Gretna near Carlisle to John-O’Groats.

But for this ride his plan is different: instead of a marathon for a few athletes, he wants a distance which most people would feel comfortable with. Talk was of 50 miles.

Edward Ward kindly offered to plot the route, and Tony Fincham suggested that it go through Woodford where a statue stands of Sylvia Pankhurst, a celebrated friend of Ethiopia.

So whether 50 miles scares you or not, start your preparations by saving a few pints’ worth of money (and pouch-goodness) for Ahead’s good work.

More details to follow.
